Title: Michael Cinco and His Works

“A Michael Cinco woman is moneyed. She may not be born into royalty but she better be married into it. My clothes appear seamless. It looks heavy and yet it floats. It looks expensive simply because it is” (Recommends, 2013). Michael Cinco was born in Samar, 1971. He first studied Fine Arts in the Philippines and later pursued fashion design training in SLIMS fashion and arts school. Moving to Dubai was a big leap for him but it eventually became a success for his career that brought him to create dresses for women locally and globally (Michaelcinco.com, 2000).  Michael Cinco is well-known for his haute couture works that dynamically contribute to the development of international and local fashion industry.

Michael Cinco created dresses not only to local personalities, but also to international celebrities. “When you see a Michael Cinco gown, you immediately recognize the artistry, attention to detail and hard work that he dedicates on every gown or dress” (HFPA, 2013).  One of Cinco’s international client was Jennifer Lopez that wore a fuchsia ombré dress uplifted by Swarovski crystals in a music award event (Claire, 2015). Cinco also made his first Hollywood gown for Mila Kunis’ character in Jupiter Ascending. The gown has a semi-sheer elements and delicate red floral details, also comes with a headpiece (Rappler, 2015).  Beyoncé also wore a Michael Cinco creation in her Haunted music video (Limited, 2016). For his local clients, Marian Rivera’s wedding gown wowed everyone. “Michael Cinco had fashioned for her an off-shoulder ecru-colored gown in French lace, studded with Swarovski crystals, cinched at the waist, and with a ball skirt with a cathedral train cascading behind her, which reportedly cost around two million pesos” Laurente (2014) said.  Another Filipino celebrity that has worn Cinco’s creation is Liza Soberano; the gown is a peach-pink, beaded ball gown with a full skirt (Estrada, 2015). The creations of Michael Cinco have really spread throughout the globe and today still.

Through his works, he has successfully carved out a name for himself as a significant fashion player that resulted to the advancement of international and local fashion industry. He has first contributed to the international fashion industry for he was first recognized by the Tyra Banks. Significantly, in 2011, he won as Breakthrough Designer in the WGSN Global Fashion Award held in New York and was also nominated as Best Designer in Grazia Style Awards (Banalet, 2013). Furthermore, his collections were featured in the 16th cycle’s eco-couture episode of the America's Next Top Model that was shot way back in November 2010 and aired on April 13, 2011 in the United States. His eco-couture dress are made up of trash bags, broken glass and any other waste or junk materials. Producers and contestants of the show were stunned upon seeing and wearing his gorgeous outfit. In fact, he has set new standards and trends in fashion designing. Correspondingly, Cinco's exemplar talented hands also create the final collection for America's Next Top Model Cycle 17 where the finalist got to decide on what would be the look of the outfit (Jesque, 2015). In addition, Cinco was the first to be featured on the Emmy-Award winning reality show, America’s Next Top Model. Producers were astonished by the talent of our Samar-growned designer. Furthermore, he always has the touch of the Filipino culture in his designs like the Barong and Terno, presenting more modern, modified versions of the terno sleeves, were embellished with patterns combining three weaves—solihiya, ikat, banig—all done in micro beads. For this reason, the Philippine Fashion Industry made its way to its expansion and development because most world class celebrities are admiring the talents and skills of Filipinos. Hence, they are looking forward to working with a Filipino designer (Banalet, 2013).

Michael Cinco’s works reflects how creative his mind is and how crafty his hands are. It took him years before becoming one of the well-known haute couture fashion designers nowadays. Cinco shows that a Filipino can rise globally and compete with the other well-known designers.  His success also represents pride for his fellow Filipinos and how it can help the other fashion designers in the country.  Coming from the East, Cinco showed to the world what a Filipino can offer to the fashion industry.

In his international events and debut, Michael Cinco does not fail to surprise the crowd for his creative masterpieces, the intricate details of sewing and the very detailed-oriented headings and with his achievements in the fashion industry, many Filipinos were inspired by his passion for fashion, which now has contributed to the advancement of the Philippines when it comes to the fashion industry. Furthermore, Cinco has always been a trailblazer, having dressed international celebrities and his debut in Paris might just open opportunities for other Filipino designers. This can be a way for the Filipinos to be recognized and expand the skills globally in a way that all Filipinos can be proud of. To go international is a dream for most and if this is where the future of Philippine fashion is headed, we can surely look forward to what lies ahead. At this point, however, Filipinos is gradually rising.
